Uddhav Thackeray backs Narendra Modi on 'Hindu nationalist' remark
Shiv Sena, a constituent of BJP-led NDA, today defended Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's "Hindu nationalist" remark, saying JD(U)'s decision to snap ties with the party was "wrong".
"Modi made no mistake by saying that he is a Hindu. It was wrong on the part of Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar to exit NDA on a secular stand after Modi's elevation in BJP," Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray told reporters after inaugurating the renovated office of the party 'Shivalaya' in south Mumbai.
"Is it a crime to say that you are a Hindu? Since when it has become wrong in this country to say that you are Hindu"? Uddhav said.
Modi had termed himself as a "Hindu nationalist" in his interview to international news agency Reuters.
Taking potshots at Congress over the food security programme, Uddhav said "what prompted Congress to implement this scheme now?. Last year, when foodgrains were rotting in godowns, the Supreme Court had directed the government to distribute them among poor. However, the government paid no heed to the court's directive".
He said Congress resorted to the ordinance route instead of passing the Food Bill in Parliament through debate because the party was aware that it would not be elected to power again.
"Congress is sinking. They know that they are not coming to power again. That is the reason they are pushing so hard for the food security bill," Uddhav said.
He announced Shiv Sena will provide legal aid to the police personnel sentenced to life imprisonment in connection with the fake encounter of alleged Chhota Rajan aide, Ram Narayan Gupta alias Lakhan Bhaiya.
A sessions court had on Friday awarded life term to 13 policemen and eight others for the 2006 encounter killing.
"We will also support their family members," Uddhav said.

Former Karnataka chief minister BS Yeddyurappa doesn't rule out returning to BJP
Former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa today indicated he did
not rule out returning to BJP as he admitted publicly for the first time
that he and some senior national BJP leaders had discussed his return.
The former BJP strongman and Karnataka Janatha Party chief, however, said he would take an "appropriate decision at the appropriate time".
"I have already received many such types of communication from BJP President Rajnath Singh and other senior leaders (on his return). I haven't come to any decision. I will discuss it with my colleagues and arrive at a decision," he said.
Moves are on for the past few weeks within a section of BJP and KJP for the return of Mr Yeddyurappa, whose party secured 10 per cent vote share in the assembly polls which saw BJP's rout and installation of Congress government.
Mr Yeddyurappa said, "The question of who makes the first move does not arise." Asked whether he would be happy to rejoin BJP, Yeddyurappa said, "I have not come to any decision."
Mr Yeddyurappa said he has no personal opinion on the issue as he represents a party. "I have not received any formal or official communication from the BJP on my return."
Asked if wants to repeat the performance of BJP which won 18 of the 28 Lok Sabha seats from Karnataka in the last polls, he said, "Wait and see. Lok Sabha elections are going to take place. We will see how other parties react. We will take a decision at an appropriate time."
Mr Yeddyurappa said the question of aligning with any other party does not arise and KJP wants to keep its separate identity. "After all, we have secured more than ten per cent of votes(in the May five assembly polls)," he argued.
On Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's elevation as the campaign committee chief, Yeddyurappa said he is the "tallest" leader and about 60 per cent of the people appreciate his leadership.
"Not only Yeddyurappa, people all across the country want to see him as the Prime Minister," he said.

Narendra Modi to contest 2014 Lok Sabha polls from Gujarat, UP
New Delhi: Gujarat Chief Minister and BJP’s poll campaign and strategy committee chief Narendra Modi is most likely to contest the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from two states, reports said on Thursday.
If sources are to be believed then the firebrand BJP leader will be contesting the 2014 General Elections from two Lok Sabha constituencies, one in Gujarat and the other in Uttar Pradesh.
Party sources claim that BJP’s parent organisation, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), is keen on Modi contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha polls from Uttar Pradesh.
The RSS central leadership believes that it is important for the party to remain focussed on politically significant states like Uttar Pradesh, if the BJP aims to dislodge the Congress government from power at the centre.
That’s probably the reason why the RSS acted as a peacemaker between Modi and BJP veteran LK Advani, when the latter resigned from all party posts in the wake of Gujarat chief minister’s elevation as the party’s poll panel chief.
Another reason why the RSS wants Modi to contest and get elected from Uttar Pradesh is his growing criticism that he is only a leader of Gujarat and not acceptable outside his state.
Interestingly, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi will be contesting from the Amethi seat in Uttar Pradesh.
Modi's close aide and former Gujarat Home Minister Amit Shah, who is the BJP’s in-charge for UP, has been given the responsibility to find the best possible option for Modi.
Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav has taken a swipe at Modi and said that he is free to contest the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from anywhere in Uttar Pradesh but not welcome in the SP-ruled state.
Replying to questions on speculation that Modi would contest from Lucknow or Varanasi, Yadav said: "He is free to contest from anywhere in the state though he is unwelcome as the people of Uttar Pradesh are peace-loving and would not like to be divided on communal lines."
Yadav has been critical of Modi, calling him a "media creation" and one who was divisive in his politics. Yadav had recently slammed a section of the media for giving undue publicity to Modi. He had said that the media ignored development in other states.
BJP leaders say that Yadav is rattled at the prospects of the "Modi juggernaut" rolling into Uttar Pradesh as it would imperil Yadav's Muslim vote bank, which would then be divided between the SP and the Congress.
With a history of tactical voting by Muslims in the state, even SP leaders are not ruling this out.
Yadav's SP has 22 MPs and the party is working to increase the number. He has repeatedly expressed his ambition to become the prime minister.

About Narendra Modi
Mr.Narendra Modi, born at Vadnagar, Mehsana district in North Gujarat born
on September 1950 in a small town. Shri Modi was brought up in a culture of values
like generosity, benevolence and social service which can be seen installed in him.
Even as a boy in the Indo-Pak war of the mid sixties, he had volunteered to serve
the Indian soldiers during transit at railway stations. He also helped people affected
by the flood in Gujarat in 1967. He was elected as the student leader of AkhilBhartiyaVidhyarthiParishad
(All India Students’ Council) due to his excellent organizational capability and
a rich insight into human psychology. He has also played prominent roles in various

This was particularly seen when he joined the college and University for higher education where his path was filled with harsh realities of life and painful toil. But as a true solider he has confronted all the bullets in this battle of life. Once he has taken a step forward he never looks back. He refuses to drop out or be defeated. It was this commitment in his life, which enabled him to complete his post graduation in political science. He started working with the RashtriyaSwayamsevakSangh (RSS), a socio-cultural organization with stern a focus on social and cultural development of India which imbibed in him the spirit of selflessness, social responsibility, dedication and nationalism.
